for steel bars. B500C steel is rarely required, and it is always worthwhile for structural engineers to check whether B500B grade steel can be used instead of B500C, because B500C usually has a significant cost overhead.
ASTM A615 grades 40, 60, and 80, and ASTM A706 grades B400B, B450B, and B500B:
1. For ASTM A615 threaded steels (grades 40, 60, and 80):
- Chemical composition content:
- Carbon (C): Generally, the carbon content is within a certain range. As the grade increases, the carbon content may slightly increase to ensure higher strength, but it is usually around 0.2% - 0.3%.
- Manganese (Mn): Manganese is an important element to improve the strength and toughness of threaded steel. The content is approximately between 1.0% - 1.6%.
- Phosphorus (P): The content of phosphorus needs to be strictly controlled and generally does not exceed 0.045% to avoid affecting the toughness and weldability of the steel.
- Sulfur (S): Sulfur content also needs to be kept at a low level, usually not exceeding 0.045%. Excessive sulfur content will increase the hot brittleness of the steel.
- Mechanical property data:
- Grade 40: The yield strength is at least 40,000 psi (about 280MPa), and the tensile strength is generally between 60,000 - 70,000 psi (about 420 - 490MPa). The elongation rate is relatively high to ensure that the steel has good deformation ability under stress.
- Grade 60: The yield strength is increased to at least 60,000 psi (about 420MPa), and the tensile strength is correspondingly increased. It is usually around 80,000 - 90,000 psi (about 550 - 620MPa). The elongation rate will be lower than that of grade 40.
- Grade 80: It has higher strength. The yield strength is above 80,000 psi (about 550MPa), and the tensile strength can reach about 100,000 psi (about 690MPa). However, the elongation rate is further reduced, and the toughness of the material is relatively weakened.
- Field applications:
- Grade 40: Suitable for some ordinary building structures that do not require extremely high strength, such as general civil residential buildings, foundations of small buildings, beams, columns and other structures. It can be used as a secondary stressed reinforcement.
- Grade 60: Widely used in various construction projects. For example, in large commercial buildings, industrial plants, bridges and other structures that require higher reinforcement strength, it can be used as the main stressed reinforcement.
- Grade 80: Commonly used in special projects with extremely high strength and load-bearing capacity requirements, such as key parts of high-rise buildings, large-scale water conservancy projects, and important infrastructure constructions such as nuclear power plants.
2. For ASTM A706 threaded steels (grades B400B, B450B, and B500B):
- Chemical composition content:
- Carbon (C): The carbon content varies according to different grades and is roughly between 0.2% - 0.35%. An increase in carbon content helps to improve the strength of the steel.
- Manganese (Mn): The content of manganese is generally around 1.0% - 1.5%, which plays an important role in improving the strength and toughness of the steel.
- Phosphorus (P): The content of phosphorus is controlled at a low level, usually not exceeding 0.035% to ensure the performance of the steel.
- Sulfur (S): The sulfur content is also relatively low, generally not exceeding 0.045%. Reducing sulfur content can reduce the hot brittleness of the steel.
- Mechanical property data:
- B400B: The yield strength is around 400MPa, and the tensile strength is around 570MPa. It has a certain elongation rate and can meet the stress requirements of general building structures.
- B450B: The yield strength is about 450MPa, and the tensile strength is higher. Compared with B400B, it has better load-bearing capacity. The elongation rate may be lower than that of B400B.
- B500B: The yield strength is above 500MPa, and the tensile strength is also relatively high. It is a threaded steel grade with relatively high strength. However, its toughness may be reduced as the strength increases.
- Field applications:
- B400B: Commonly used in general construction projects, such as beams, slabs, and columns of ordinary industrial and civil buildings. It can be used as stressed reinforcement.
- B450B: Suitable for building structures that require higher reinforcement strength, such as non-key parts of large public buildings and high-rise buildings.
- B500B: Can be used in some special building structures that require higher reinforcement strength and greater load-bearing capacity, such as some parts of large bridges and key structures of large water con
